The Red Shades is a rock opera about trans superheroes. Mixing elements of a rock concert and musical theater, it showcases the talent of trans and queer artists of color. The show tells the story of Ida, a teenage trans girl, who runs away from home to escape the traumas of small-town life and joins a gang of trans superheroes squatting in the Tenderloin. The show has drawn crowds of 200 in its first showcase and 300 in its second. In addition to performing successful runs at Pianofight and Fresh Meat Festival, The Red Shades headlined San Francisco Trans March 2018. It has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle and on KPFA. It is currently in collaboration with Z Space Theater to develop a full theatrical production. This Starline Social Club show will be one of the last chances to catch the show in “concert version” before it goes into theatrical development.
