A Bit of History

Right smack in the middle of two historical jazz neighborhoods, Starline Social Club is a historical venue built in the late 19th century. On one side, there was “The Harlem of the West” where all talents performed on the renowned 7th Street strip in West Oakland. On the other side, you had Sweet's Ballroom, a crowd favorite that housed thousands of dancers every week. Count Basie, Billie Holiday, and Ray Charles all came here and left an important mark that once shaped Oakland but is almost forgotten. Today, it is only fitting that the community’s love for Lindy Hop has brought the swinging tunes back to this vintage venue once again, allowing us to relive the Golden Age of the Oakland Jazz scene.

Come join us for swing dancing, meet new people, and get your week started right! All levels and ages welcome! No partner needed.  Learn more  at www.breakawayswing.com

Run With The Moon

Run With The Moon

Run With The Moon is a full moon series dedicated to celebrating the songs of our roots. To the life within us that often gets lost in the shadow of the daily grind, to our collective history of existence through music, the wild, the call of the human. Run With The Moon is dedicated to bright night skies and to those of us who look to music as our own specific form of worship.

If any of this sounds interesting and/or slightly unclear to you... you should join us to see how it will all unfold! We're figuring it out too.

On the full moon we'll be playing music and telling stories. Some people will be drinking tea, some people will be drinking whiskey. Some people may cry in their beers. We hope that at some point, some people might even dance.

Hosted by Desiree Cannon & Kit Center, and featuring different performers each month.

Sylvan LaCue: The Loner Tour w/ Down 2 Earth & Just Rese

Sylvan LaCue is wrapping his "The Loner Tour" in Oakland with us at Starline Social Club on Wednesday, December 14th - and bringing along Down 2 Earth & Just Rese!!

Miami, FL, wordsmith Sylvan LaCue closes out his 8-city tour with his final stop in Oakland, CA. The rapper dropped off his acclaimed album Far From Familiar in early April, creating a body of work that proved to be heavily layered in content and highly textured in sound. Going against the current standards of internet rap, LaCue continues to push the limits with his rap delivery and messages of wisdom and self-improvement. His energy on stage is just as captivating as his words, which is why we're happy to present The Loner Tour.

Bay Area rap trio Down2Earth and emcee Just Rese will also be performing.

Taiko / Jegog

Taiko / Jegog

On December 15, 2016, Starline presents the second iteration of a joint performance featuring the loudest, most energetic percussion ensembles in the Bay Area. Originating in the bamboo forests of western Bali, jegog is a rare form of traditional Balinese music that features gigantic bamboo xylophones. Japanese taiko is the dance/martial arts of drumming, combining powerful rhythms with athletic choreography.
Gamelan Sekar Jaya and Jiten Daiko's first joint performance was at the Starline in February of 2016. Since then we've performed together across the Bay Area, developed original collaborative material, and started to explore the possibilities of this cross-genre, cross-equator, cross-instrument connection. At Taiko/Jegog we'll present a mix of traditional, contemporary, and premiere works that speak to the burgeoning relationship between these two ensembles. - - - (almost) NO REPEATS FROM LAST TIME :) - - -

Japanese snacks by Ryoji's Bait Shop and a No English dance party mean that nowhere else on a Thursday night is half as fun as here.

CLUB CHAI WITH DJ HARAM (DISCWOMAN)

CLUB CHAI WITH DJ HARAM (DISCWOMAN)

DJ Haram (Zubeyda Muzeyyen) is coming with a concept. Bringin’ her Identity Crisis mix to our series, the journey involves experimentation with mixing Jersey Club and Middle Eastern instrumentals in a non-abrasive way that will have you ready to work it out. Vocal samples remind us not to assimilate and, a la Mary J, we’ll be “just fine.”

Zubeyda grew up in a diverse part of North Jersey where she’d drive around with her Dad, ogling at his rare Middle Eastern cassette collection.  Now this self-jokingly-proclaimed “post art post activist” represents the Browntourage ideal of young adults actively engaging struggles of alienation and knowing how to have a ball at the same time. Such intention is exemplified by parties she throws, such as (f)LAWLESS, a benefit party for bail and legal fees associated with social justice. The Facebook description reads “dress to impress, know how to act.” In fact, Zubeyda is responsible for one of our favorite guides of all time for how-not-to-be-sus-in-your-scene titled BROS FALL BACK (for reals, its free!). As far as the Identity Crisis mix goes, we asked DJ Haram to expand on her geomotional relationships and musical tendencies to help diagnose the >i>d>e>n>t<i<t<y< >c>r>i<s<i<s<

OAKNYE

OAKNYE

Boots Riley & The Coup • Kahil El'Zabar Quartet • Starline Social Club • www.OAKNYE.com • co-presented by Amoeba San Francisco

"Compared to fancy hotel and club parties happening in San Francisco, OAKNYE's tasteful events are uber-affordable and will likely have a more enjoyable, intimate vibe." - East Bay Express

THE COUP:
Los Angeles Times: "Considerable musical chops... The Coup throws one fine party."

Montreal Gazette: "Boots Riley is a consummately charismatic front man, establishing his as one of the best live rap acts going, after Philadelphia untouchables the Roots."

Austin American-Statesman: "The Coup isn't a rock 'n' roll band. It's a hip-hop band. But they are a miracle of everyday life and proved it at Emo's on Saturday night. I have no idea when the Coup turned into one of the best bands on the planet, but here we are."

Pitchfork.com: "Silk E sings and struts like Tina Turner raised on hip-hop."

KAHIL EL'ZABAR:
Kahil El'Zabar (percussion) Corey Wilkes (trumpet) Khari Lemuel (cielo) Teodross Avery (trombone)

Kahil El'Zabar is a jazz multi-instrumentalist and composer. He regularly records for Delmark Records. He attended Lake Forest College and joined the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in the early 1970s, becoming its chairman in 1975. During the 1970s, he formed the musical groups Ritual Trio and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, both of which remain active. Musicians with whom Kahil EL'Zabar has collaborated include Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Cannonball Adderley, and Paul Simon.

Many of these can be heard on the group’s debut album, High Art (Innova Records, 2013), and its upcoming Dance Music (New Amsterdam Records) and TAFT (slashsound).

M. Lamar works across opera, metal, performance, video, sculpture and installation to craft sprawling narratives of radical becoming. Most recently, his work has appeared at MoMa PS1 and at Performance Space 122 in New York City. He is the recipient of a 2016 NYFA Fellowship in Music and Sound and grants from Material Vodka 2016, the Rema Hort Mann Foundation (2015), Harpo Foundation (2014–2015), and Franklin Furnace Fund (2013–14).

This performance is a workshop performance of "Discipline #1," from M. Lamar’s "Lordship and Bondage: The Birth of the Negro Superman.” "Lordship" is written and performed by Lamar in collaboration with The Living Earth Show. With a libretto that draws on Hegel, Nietzsche and Sun Ra, “Lordship and Bondage” synthesizes the Negro spiritual, black and doom metal, and contemporary classical opera to engage African Americans' experiences of enslaved and liberated consciousness.

This performance lasts 1 hour and concludes with a 20-minute post-show discussion.

Nothing Feels Natural is the first full-length by Washington, D.C.'s Priests. Recorded in the fall of 2016, the record is the culmination of two years' writing, touring, tweaking, and refining. Throughout that time the band has carved out an existence on its own terms, performing mostly all-ages shows booked via a network of like-minded artists both within and outside punk communities.

The album represents a major step forward for Priests. It's the band’s most stylistically diverse set of songs to date, expanding on their lo-fi post-punk bona-fides with ideas drawn from pop, R&B, and industrial noise. Thematically, Nothing can be understood as a series of vignettes -- nine stories that crystallize into a bigger picture about the economics of human relationships, the invisibility of feminized labor, and the dual purpose of art for both the group and the individual.

The Coathangers + TBA

THE COATHANGERS + TBA

DOORS 8/ SHOW 9

TICKETS - $15

Be leery of any punk band with initial ambitions that go beyond just playing shows with their friends. Sure, great bands ascend beyond basements and handmade demos all the time, but the best acts start with little consideration for the outside world. The groups are their own insular worlds, where the reward comes from the process, not accolades and riches. And the bands that thrive on their own artistic satisfaction usually wind up being the bands that are able to grow beyond the donation jar into sustainable successful musical careers. Their charisma is contagious, their songs exist outside of fads, and their spirits can weather the inevitable ups and downs of life as touring musicians. Such is the case with the Atlanta trio The Coathangers.

When The Coathangers started up in 2006, their aspirations were humble. “I think all bands in their early twenties start for fun,” says guitarist/vocalist Julia Kugel when talking about their early years of cheeky no-wave and irreverent garage rock. But Julia and her bandmates Meredith Franco (bass/vocals) and Stephanie Luke (drums/vocals) were serious about their craft, and that combination of modest outside expectations and absolute dedication to their music made for exhilarating live shows and contagious records. Ten years later, The Coathangers are still going strong, and while their palette has expanded over the years to touch upon hip-shakin’ classic rock, soulful country ballads, and golden oldies pop, their primary attack strategy still relies heavily on the jagged hooks and boisterous choruses of their formative years. Their fifth album Nosebleed Weekend retains all the devil-may-care magnetism and serrated instrumentation of their debut, but it flourishes with a decade’s worth of songwriting discipline and chemistry.

Nosebleed Weekend kicks off with “Perfume”, a song that marries sultry pop vocals with toothy guitar riffs in a manner that would make Ann and Nancy Wilson proud. It’s hard to imagine The Coathangers writing a song this accessible in their early years, but in 2016 it fits perfectly into their canon. From there the band launches into “Dumb Baby”, which harkens back to the gritty neo-garage rock of Murder City Devils. Longtime fans who still clamor for their brash post-punk angle will be immediately satiated by “Squeeki Tiki”. And after hearing the noisy loud-quiet-loud bombast of “Excuse Me?” it’s no wonder that Kim Gordon has become an outspoken fan of the band. It’s an eclectic album inspired by life on the road, lost loved ones, and Kugel’s recent move to Southern California. “We always say that each record is a snapshot of our life at the time,” Kugel says. “As far as style… it’s just what came out of us at that point.” So whether it’s the foreboding garage rock of the title track, the post-punk groove of “Burn Me”, the stripped-down pop of “I Don’t Think So”, or the dynamic grunge of “Down Down”, The Coathangers command their songs with passion and authority.

The biggest departure for Nosebleed Weekend was the recording process. While all their previous albums were recorded in Atlanta at The Living Room with Ed Rawls, their latest album found the band out in California’s North Hollywood at Valentine Recording Studios with Nic Jodoin. “The Beach Boys and Bing Crosby both recorded there!” Kugel says excitedly. “It was an amazing experience, not to mention a ghostly one too. The studio had been custom built by Jimmy Valentine and he was very protective of his passion. It sounds weird, but his spirit was there, checking in on us and fucking with us a bit.” Nosebleed Weekend was the first session at Valentine Recording Studios since Jimmy’s professional interests were diverted elsewhere in 1979. The studio doors were shut, capturing a time capsule of the LA music industry back in the ‘70s. Thinking back to the early years of The Coathangers, it’s hard to imagine the scrappy Southern ladies ever recording in a historic studio in the San Fernando Valley, but it’s a classic demonstration of what can happen when humble young punks stick to their guns.

GARY WILSON & DANNY JAMES LIVE!

GARY WILSON & DANNY JAMES LIVE!

GARY WILSON

Gary Wilson emerged from New York's DIY movement with 1977's proto-New Wave masterpiece You Think You Really Know Me, an extraordinary record which has been known to suck unprepared new listeners in like a drug and never let go. Shortly after its limited release its creator simply vanished.
In the 25-year wake before he was found again, Gary's small-town opus had spread by word-of-mouth and indie radio to inspire a whole new generation of musicians and producers with his bizarre songs and personal musical vision. His cult following includes Beck, who shouts him out in "Where It's At (Two Turntables And A Microphone)", The Roots’ ?uestlove, Simpsons creator Matt Groening, and of course, Stones Throw’s Peanut Butter Wolf.
The re-release You Think You Really Know Me in 2002 won him accolades in The New York Times and culminated in sold-out shows in New York and Los Angeles. Gary Wilson has continued making music in the years following his "disappearance." His music continues to chronicle his obsessions and angst that his followers would expect from him. His songs have been compared to everything from Prince to Talking Heads–bursting with electro-funk, synth rock, lounge, soul, and avant-garde jazz. And yet nothing has been released until now with his a new album, 12" single, and Fan Club 45 on Stones Throw.

In recent news Earl Sweatshirt, one of the most prominent members of the hip-hop collective known as Odd Future (which also features Tyler, the Creator and Frank Ocean, among others), recently released a new single, entitled "Grief". In its first week, the official Youtube version alone garnered well over one million views, attesting to the young artist's considerable popularity, despite his characteristic off-kilter esthetic. The song is attracting attention not only because of Earl Sweatshirt's dark and compelling verses, and its accompanying atmospheric video, but also for sampling DIY/Outsider Music pioneer Gary Wilson.

DANNY JAMES

"Lucky for me, I stumbled into the Constellation Side Stage just in time to catch Danny James and his Once and Future Band. Even their soundcheck was entertaining, backup Vocalist/Keyboard player Joel Robinow checking levels was funnier than your average stand-up comedian, and he was just being himself. Frontman Danny James, rocking a fringe-jacket and prog-sideburns, has a voice like a caramel s’more-- it’s warm, familiar, but in a wonderful surprise, a little salty. The best way to describe their sound is to imagine ELO, Steely Dan, and Yes going on a cruise ship, getting silly on Mai Tais and falling asleep under a palm frond. Their collected dreams would sound just like Danny James and his Once and Future Band. They’ve got everything you’d wanna like about Prog, but you can also dance to it. I also cannot stress enough how fantastic their stage presence is, especially Robinow’s. I want to have a beer with him so much that If he ran for president, I’d vote for him 69 times." - Noisey
