Guy Fox with Bows & Brass Magic

$10 presale, $13 @ the door

Guy Fox : Oakland band Guy Fox found their sea legs in San Francisco playing into the wee hours on Tuesday nights at the Boom Boom Room, a small but effective incubator for Bay Area music. They crafted their live performance to match the energy of the first iteration of the band, formed in Maine, where living rooms across the East Coast would carelessly (and sometimes sloppily) dance to soul and funk covers by the band.

There is a contemporary sound occurring in the Bay Area and Guy Fox is one of those at the helm. It’s not born out of decades of psych-rock, surf-rock or even folk, but lies at the very foundation of Bay Area music—soul and funk. Punctuating brass, playful bass lines, and even funk-pop make its way into a musical aesthetic found at the fingertips of Guy Fox.

Peter Granquist can be found behind the drum lending vocals along Nate Witherbee, who also plays host to synthesizer, guitar, piano and song writing. Greg Waters primarily contributes guitar and saxophones, while bassist Charlie Moore accompanies on vocals and synthesizer.

KQED Arts says: "The group's sense of humor and lighthearted nature is matched by their dedication... They have a way of making any venue feel like someone's living room, everything else falls away until it becomes you, your friends, and a good old fashioned dance party fueled by live music. Effortless is the word I'd use to describe their musical talent."

Bows (RECORD RELEASE PARTY):  Berkeley-based group Bows is the brainchild of Kaila McIntyre-Bader and Luke Bace. The night before flying out to New York for several CMJ showcases with their other band (Big Tree), Kaila fell off her bike and broke BOTH her elbows (hence the band name). Luke rushed her to the ER where she promptly received double casts, and the next morning they flew across the country. When they returned, Kaila was unable to play piano, so she started messing around with some new sounds on her computer. She asked Luke if he could replicate them with his synthesizers, and he accepted the challenge. As Kaila's arms slowly healed, Luke worked on developing a whole new world of ear candy, and Bows was born.

“The Day We Left” is a concept album about post-apocalyptic space travel, conspiracy, and adventure. Ripped from the arms of her dying love, our protagonist must leave a radioactive Earth and settle into a new colony the government has set up in a distant galaxy. Faced with grief and a totalitarian society, she tries to figure out if the "alien" voices in her head are real, and if she can keep quiet as humankind once again begins to destroy itself and the new planet. Bows will perform the entire album from start to finish at this record release show.

Brass Magic:  Brass Magic, the incendiary Bay Area horns-vocals-and-drums band, plays high-energy dance music infused with fresh modern influences. The sound of the eight-piece brass ensemble is “feel good” dance music that starts any party with their full horn textures and unique layered rhythms.

Started in 2010 by trombonist Danny Lubin-Laden, Brass Magic originally existed as a casual assemblage of musicians to play Lubin-Laden’s compositions at house parties in the Bay Area. With a move to Brooklyn and recruitment of classmates from The New School to perform around New York City, the band evolved and began performing shows regularly.

Moving back to the West Coast and settling in Oakland in 2013, Brass Magic has quickly become a staple of the San Francisco nightlife playing at Madrone Art Bar every Tuesday night as well as impromptu streetshows.
